Times Herald Record Editorial – The legal marijuana era officially began in New York Monday with the state Health Department announcement that it is accepting applications for licenses to grow, manufacture and dispense medicinal marijuana.

The announcement means the Town of Wallkill, already home to the area’s major retail business corridor, a vibrant health corridor and several industrial operations, appears poised to cash in on another aspect of its economic base – farming.

The Town Board voted unanimously two weeks ago to approve plans by Valley Agriceuticals, of Purchase, to build a $10 million marijuana cultivating and processing plant in Wallkill’s Fair Oaks section. The board emphasized the agricultural preservation aspect of the project in making its decision. The operation would use 10 acres of a 70-acre site, with the remaining land to remain as open space.

That shows creative thinking and is to be commended, but really, the idea of making marijuana available legally for medicinal use to persons suffering from severe debilitating or life-threatening conditions stands on its own. Read Full Article
